Conditional Sentences
Conditional sentences, often called "if clauses," are used to express situations and their consequences. They are usually composed of two clauses: the "if" clause (the condition) and the main clause (the result).
Podmínkové věty, často nazývané „jestliže věty“, se používají k vyjádření situací a jejich důsledků. Obvykle se skládají ze dvou vět: Věta „pokud“ (podmínka) a hlavní věta (výsledek).
Types of Conditionals:
Zero Conditional:
Form: If + present simple, present simple
Use: Facts or general truths.
Example: If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.
First Conditional:
Form: If + present simple, will + base verb
Use: Real and possible situations in the future.
Example: If it rains tomorrow, I will take an umbrella.
Second Conditional:
Form: If + past simple, would + base verb
Use: Unreal or hypothetical situations.
Example: If I won the lottery, I would travel the world.
Third Conditional:
Form: If + past perfect, would have + past participle
Use: Past situations that did not happen.
Example: If I had known about the party, I would have gone.
Mixed Conditionals:
Sometimes, the time in the if clause and the main clause will be different.
Example: If I had worked harder in school (past), I would be a doctor now (present).
