Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Identify the form and use of ‘going to’, ‘will’, and the present continuous to talk about the future.

  • Use ‘going to’, ‘will’, and the present continuous to write sentences about food waste and ways to prepare food.

Forms to Express the Future

There are three forms to express the future:

  1. Going to

    • Example: "I’m going to prepare dinner."

    • Identified usage: Future plans made before the moment of speaking.

  2. Will/Future Simple Tense

    • Example: "I think we will eat more healthy food in the future."

    • Identified usage: Predictions about the future or decisions made at the moment of speaking.

  3. Present Continuous Tense

    • Example: "I am meeting the manager about the food festival at 4:00 p.m."

    • Identified usage: Arrangements made for a definite future time.

  • Questions to ponder:

    • How many forms can we use to express the future?

Usage of Forms

Going to:

  • “Going to” is used for:

    • Future plans made before the moment of speaking.

Will:

  • “Will” is used for:

    • Predictions about the future.

    • Example: "Ok, I’ll call and ask him."

Present Continuous:

  • Used to describe

    • Future arrangements made for a specific time.

    • Example: "I’m visiting my cousin tomorrow."

Detailed Rules

Going to

  • Structure: Subject + be (am/is/are) + going to + base form of the verb (infinitive).

    • Example: She is going to go to the cinema.

  • Definition: An infinitive is the base form of a verb (the simple form of the verb that would be found in the dictionary).

Will

  • Structure: Subject + will + base form of the verb (infinitive).

    • Example: It will rain.

Present Continuous

  • Structure: Subject + verb to be (am/is/are) + verb + ing

  • Examples:

    • Singular: She is calling her mom this night.

    • Plural: They are leaving soon.

    • Example: I am cooking my dinner this evening.

Task 1

  • Read the sentences, then circle the correct option.

    • Examples:

    1. There is being / will be more genetically-modified food in future.
