Spatial Patterns

Arrangement of objects on Earth that form a repeated design
4 questions to ask when looking at a spatial pattern on a map
- Is there an area that has more objects than others?
- Is there an area that has fewer objects than others?
- Is there a grouping, or cluster, of objects?
- Is there a relationship between the different locations on the map and the individual objects?
There are 3 aspects needed to build an understanding of spatial perspective.
- The Natural World
- Human-Environment Interactions
- Geographic Representations

Refers to the number of people living in each unit of area
- Unit of area could be a square mile
To find this you take the total population and divide it by the unit area
Population Density maps usually have different shades of a color to show the average numbers.
- Map keys are very important on these types of maps.

Three kinds: Linear, Dispersed, and Nucleated
Linear Patterns
- People settle near methods of transportation
Dispersed Patterns
- Spread over a large area
- Farms, forests, open spaces
Nucleated Patterns
- Buildings are clustered together to share resources
- Buildings are clustered because the landscape around them makes it difficult to build
