Definition of Shaping: A method used to teach complex behaviors by rewarding closer approximations of the desired behavior. Highly effective when a behavior is complex or unlikely to occur spontaneously.
Process:
Begin with reinforcing any behavior that resembles the desired behavior.
Gradually reinforce only responses that are increasingly closer to the target behavior.
Ultimately, reinforce only the exact desired behavior.
Examples of Shaping:
Training animals, such as dogs, dolphins, and lions, to perform complex tasks such as rescue missions and entertainment acts.
Application of Shaping in Dog Training
COVID-19 Detection by Dogs:
Dogs have a sophisticated sense of smell that allows them to detect COVID-19 effectively.
