Psychosocial Development in Middle Childhood

Erik Erikson's Theory

During the school stage (ages 6-12), children face the psychosocial task of industry versus inferiority.

  • Industry: Refers to engaging in work and activities.
  • Inferiority: Feelings of inadequacy when comparing oneself to peers.

The primary task involves children comparing themselves to peers and assessing their capabilities. Children are actively involved in doing, planning, playing, and achieving, which helps them gauge how they measure up against others.
