Common TOEIC Vocabulary
Overview
The PDF is a monolithic vocabulary‐drill handbook (≈1500 entries) prepared by “Lửa TOEIC”. It is laid out as a reference list, subdivided by the TOEIC test parts (Part 1 ⟶ Part 7). Each page follows a stable grid:
• Running index (STT)
• Head-word ➜ grammatical label + IPA transcription ➜ concise Vietnamese gloss ➜ single English example + single Vietnamese translation.
In addition, scattered front/back-matter pages include book credits, usage wishes (non-commercial use), encouragement to send errata, and isolated graphic captions. No “argument” pages (i.e., there is no continuous prose or theory); every information unit is a lexical entry.
Below are hand-crafted study notes – reproduced in the same page order – but deduplicated and re-clustered so the learner can quickly isolate, memorise and revise. Each page-section starts with ➜ PAGE-TAG so you can jump back to the PDF if needed.
➜ PAGE 1 – Cover
• Title motif: “ONLINE-INTERACTIVE TOEIC”,
• Branding: “Lửa TOEIC – Trường đào tạo TOEIC Online”.
• Key visual: stylised icons, page shows isolated algebraic scribbles (e.g., 55/7) but they have no linguistic relevance.
➜ PAGE 2 – Preface / Copyright
• Book is a free resource, please do not sell.
• Send corrections to: firetoeic@gmail.com.
• Compiled by “Nhóm học thuật Lửa TOEIC”.
➜ PAGE 3 → PAGE 13 (Part 1 vocabulary 1-136)
The first TOEIC Part-1 word-bank (pictures description). All items are concrete, camera-friendly nouns/verbs used in photo prompts.
• Actions around workplaces: arrange, divide, remove, assemble, rearrange, rake into piles, lean against.
• Static objects: column, container, crate, counter, drawer, fence, shelf, workstation, bicycle rack.
• Landscape / place words: path, fountain, mount, stairway, walkway, patio.
• Frequent photo props: server, backpack, handrail, power-outlet, potted-plant, ladder, sign, road-sign, traffic-light, vehicle.
• Typical collocations to memorise exactly as TOEIC says them:
– be\ seated\ at (được ngồi)
– under\ construction (đang thi công)
– side\ by\ side (kề sát)
– row/line (xếp hàng)
Mnemonic tip: build picture-mind-maps; e.g., group plug, cord, power outlet under “electricity”; group counter, sign, merchandise under “store interior”.
➜ PAGE 14 → PAGE 22 (Part 2 vocabulary)
• This section shifts to spoken Q-A lexis: time phrases, workplace office nouns, meeting verbs.
• Time blocks: a full day, half day, at the end of, so far, not any longer.
• Meeting procedure nouns: attendance sheet, department meeting, press conference, proposal, revised draft.
• Logistics words: direct flight, shuttle, currency exchange office, corner lot, construction firm.
• Behaviour / decision verbs: cancel, approve, reorganise, allocate, insist, waive (fees), comply, postpone.
Formulae to retain:
fill\ an\ order (hoàn thiện đơn hàng)
take\ a\ poll (tiến hành khảo sát)
be\ in\ charge\ of (chịu trách nhiệm)
➜ PAGE 23 → PAGE 26 (Part 3 words – conversations)
• Corporate roles: accountant, chief-financial-officer, contractor, department-head.
• Negotiation / finance: budget, merger, defect, quotation, quality-control.
• Service nouns: catering, copier, name-tag, memo, missed-delivery.
• Soft-skills verbs: convince, compile, conduct an interview, get through paperwork.
Note: Many entries appear twice (e.g., branch already defined in Part 1) – treat later occurrences as reinforcement.
➜ PAGE 27 → PAGE 31 (Part 4 words – talks / announcements)
• Presentation verbs: address, accomplish, achieve, secure, highlight.
• KPI / performance nouns: best-performing, top-performing, attendance, sales-projection.
• Event logistics: venue, inaugural session, audiovisual equipment, complimentary shuttle, raffle, door-prize.
• Customer-care collocations: for\ one’s\ convenience, at\ no\ (extra)\ cost.
➜ PAGE 32 → PAGE 60 (Part 5 – grammar-gap lexis)
Highly recycled business terms; aim is to force learners to choose grammatically correct form (verb vs. noun adj.). Keep four buckets:
- Verbs: allocate, diversify, expedite, implement, unveil, offset, alleviate.
- Adjectives: subsequent, tentative, unanimous, affordable, preliminary, revised, qualified.
- Nouns: contingency, prerequisite, contingency, oversight, outage.
- Adverbs / linkers: meanwhile, moreover, notwithstanding, accordingly.
Sentence-completion tip: memorise predictable TOEIC frames:
• “The board has yet to reach a decision.” ⇒ yet to + V.
• “All travel expenses will be reimbursed.” ⇒ passive past participle.
➜ PAGE 61 → PAGE 94 (Part 6 – text completion)
• Longer collocations: meet (exceed) expectations, make an informed decision, bring sth to one’s attention, adhere to guidelines.
• HR-tone words: job posting, probationary period, performance appraisal, payroll department.
• Facility-maintenance: plumbing, ventilation, thermostat, fixture, rolling shutter.
• Marketing prose: state-of-the-art, cutting-edge, upscale, flagship, hallmark.
Grammar reminders (typical Part 6 traps):
• affect (v) vs. effect (n)
• be eligible for + noun | be entitled to + verb/noun
• participial adjective pairs: exciting vs. excited; damaging vs. damaged.
➜ PAGE 95 → PAGE 113 (Part 7 – reading passages)
The word list continues but blends general newspaper/business lexicon with literary adjectives. Notables:
• Culture / media: anecdote, autobiography, correspondent, circulation, novelist, columnist.
• Urban / civic: cityscape, congestion, dealership, tenant, zoning, revitalise.
• Food & craft: bistro, confection, pastry, glaze, ceramic, upholstery, cutlery.
• Science / nature: ecological, geological, botanical, hybrid, infrared sensor.
• Soft adjectives: stunning, gripping, moving, serene, hearty, bustling.
Reading-strategy reminder: in TOEIC Part 7, speed-recognise “signal” nouns (date, venue, RSVP, extension number) – they answer wh-questions directly.
Global Study Plan
- DAILY DECKS – Slice the list into 30-word decks. Use spaced repetition (24-h / 48-h / 1-week).
- VISUALISE – For Part 1 nouns/verbs draw stick-figure sketches; for abstract Part 5 nouns write a one-sentence mini-story.
- EQUATION CARDS – Keep formula flash-cards:
be\ on\ display
fill\ out\ (a\ form)
comply\ with\ regulations - “3-WAVE” REVISION – (a) silent reading, (b) speak aloud with IPA, (c) dictation gap.
- MOCK-LINK – Every time you learn 8 new words make a fake TOEIC photo or email including all 8.
High-utility Collocations (extract)
• in\ the\ shade / out\ of\ order / stand\ in\ line
• arrive\ at\ (a\ consensus) / launch\ a\ campaign
• meet\ the\ deadline / defer\ the\ decision
• trade\ fair / franchise\ fee / assembly\ line
• state-of-the-art equipment / under-performing division
Mini-Glossary of Trick-Pairs
• economic (thuộc kinh tế) vs. economical (tiết kiệm)
• historic (mang tính lịch-sử) vs. historical (thuộc về lịch-sử nói chung)
• profitable vs. beneficial (profit \neq benefit)
• affect (v) vs. effect (n/v)
• advice (n, uncountable) vs. advise (v)
Formula Cheat-Sheet (TOEIC favourites)
\text{be subject to} + noun (bị chịu)
\text{contribute to} + noun
\text{in} + \text{compliance with}
either\ A\ or\ B neither\ A\ nor\ B
\text{Not}\ … \text{until}\ … (inversion question pattern)
Final Tips
- Learn IPA once – it is printed for every entry.
- For verbs always note object type: e.g., reimburse someone for something.
- Cross-reference duplicates (e.g., branch, proposal, arrange) across Parts – TOEIC consciously recycles.
- Turn “example sentences” into Q-A: read Vietnamese cue, recall English sentence.
Happy drilling – and send errata to the email stated in Page 2!
