Wilson and Neutrality

  • Wilson wanted Americans to remain neutral in their actions and thoughts 

  • He won the reelection in 1916 with the slogan “He kept us out of War”

  • He did not want to get himself into wars  

U-Boats

  • Germany used the U-Boats to block Britain 

  • These U-boats sank the British passengers ship Lusitania carrying 128 American civilians germany promised to never do it again 

  • Germany snake Frenchs passenger ship Sussex and promised they would bever do it again 

Lusitania

  • Was a British passenger ship that carried 128 American civilians that Germany sank on May 7th 1915

Zimmerman Note

  • Was a telegram sent from Germany to Mexico asking them to declare war on the US to exchange to regain its lost lands 

  • It was interpreted by the British and passed to the US. 

  • Congress declared war on Germany on April 6th 1917

Selective Service Act

  • An act passed by congress that sent more than 4 million Americans to help the allies in France 

Committee on Public Information (CPI)

  • Controlled information released about the way to sway public opinion 

  • Facilitated a speaking tour of people to encourage people to support the war often called “Four-Minute Men”

Women During/After War

  • Women filled the men's positions in their workforce keeping america running 

  • They helped lead to the passage of the 19th amendment 

Great Migration

  • More than 1 million blacks moved from the south to the north in 1910-1920

  • Push Factors- racial violence, Jim Crow Laws, low paying jobs 

  • Pull Factors- Economic opportunities/ jobs 

Espionage Act

  • It allowed postal authorities to ban disloyal newspapers, magazines, or printed material from the mail 

Sedition Act

  • Limited freedom of speech by outlawing “disloyal, profane or abusive language” against the government. Constitution or the military forces 

14 Points

  • Was a plan for peace in Europe

  • The first five would eliminate the causes of war

    • Disarmament 

    • Impartial adjustment of colonial claims 

    • Open diplomacy  

League of Nations

  • The rest of the 14 points dealt with national self- determination, allowing people to determine their nations own political status 

  • His most important point was #14 which was the league of nations 

  • It was the first intergovernmental organization established to promote international cooperation to achieve international peace and security 

Paris Peace Conference

  • It consisted of Britain, France, italy, and the United States 

  • Ottoman Empire  and Austro- Hungary no longer exist

  • Germany was not allowed in this 

  • Britain and France did not want to get peace without a victory and they did not want to lose territory 

  • They scrapped most of wilson’s ideas, however left the ledge of nations in the treaty of versailles

  • Payment by the losing country in a war to the winner for the damages caused by the war

  • Cost of living started costing more 

  • Which lead to higher prices for previously rationed goods 

Red Scare

  • Anarchists started riots and mailed bombs to individuals in the United States 

  • Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer launched raids seeking communist supports 

  • Sought to round up anarchists, communists and other political radicals and then deport them when possible 

  • Anyone Eastern European descent was suspected 

Palmer Raids

  • It was launched by Mithcal Palmer who launched these raids to seak out communists supporters 

Nicola Sacco

  • He was an italian immigrant and anarchists that lived in Braintree Massachusetts 

  • Convicted of murder of a payclear and security guard during a robbery with little evidence 

  • The last individuals to be executed by the state of massachusetts in 1927
