Reasons for National Party Victory in 1948

  • Broederband favoured nationalist outlook —> started economic movement to promote Afrikaner business

  • Idea of Apartheid introduced —> separate development, encouraged racism, laws limiting blacks

1948 ELECTION:

  • NP won 400,000 votes

  • UP won 524,000 votes

  • NP had more constituencies - therefore became the next gov

minister of native affairs —> Hendrik Verwoerd (1950-58) —> PM from 1958-66
