Intro to Biology
What is Biology?
Employs scientific knowledge to living things
Characteristics of Biology
Cells
Smallest units of an organism that are alive
Reproduction Method
Organisms produce new organisms
Universal Genetic Code
Determines the inherited traits of every organism on Earth
Grow and Develop
Simple increase in size
Need for Materials and Energy
Need materials and energy to survive
Response to Stimuli
A signal which an organism responds to
Maintaining Homoestasis
Temparature and Water mainly to survive (Internal Stimuli)
Evolution
Any organism can change over time (Growth)
Variables or Key Terms to know
Independent Variable
Variable that is deliberately changed
Dependent Variable
Is the one that change in response to the independent variable
Controlled Variable
That are kept constant except for the one being tested
Control Group
Exposed to the same conditions except for the variable being tested
Quantitative Data
Type of data involves counting or measuring
Qualitative Data
Type of data describes characteristics
Hypothesis
A scientific explanation that can be tested
Inference
A logical interpretation based on what scientists already know
Observation
Scientific investigation always start with it
Scientific Theory
Describes a tested explanation for a phenomena
Data of Seed Lab
CER of Seed Lab
Claim
Water is better for plant germination than acidic or basic solutions.
Evidence
For the first 3 days of the experiment, none of the seeds sprouted for any of the solutions. Nothing happened until day 4, where the seeds with water grew up till 1/2 inches.
Reasoning
3 out of 5 seeds in the water grew up to ½ inch, whereas the seeds from acid and basic didn’t show any growth.
