Electric Vehicle Components and Safety
Battery
- Lithium-ion batteries are used to store energy in electric vehicles (EVs).
- In the e-Golf, the battery is located under the vehicle.
- The battery provides energy for driving, heating, and cooling the vehicle.
Electric Machine (E-Machine)
- The electric machine is the electric propulsion motor of the vehicle.
- It is analogous to an internal combustion engine in a gas-powered vehicle.
Voltage Converter
- Electric vehicles need DC (direct current) to charge their batteries.
- AC (alternating current) is commonly available, so it needs to be converted to DC for charging EVs.
- The voltage converter performs this AC to DC conversion.
High Voltage Safety and Components
- High voltage (HV) components in an e-Golf receive power directly from the high voltage battery.
- Only certified high voltage technicians are authorized to work on these components.
- Example: The AC compressor in an e-Golf is a high voltage component.
Scenario: AC Compressor Service
- A certified high voltage technician must de-energize the HV system before a non-HV certified technician(EIP) replaces the AC compressor.
- After the replacement, the certified technician re-energizes the HV system.
- Teamwork is essential: certified technicians and other personnel collaborate to ensure safe and effective repairs.
High Voltage Cables
- HV cables deliver electric current from the battery to HV components.
- These cables are always orange colored.
- They are dangerous and should only be handled by authorized personnel.
Maintenance Connector
- The maintenance connector is the disconnect point for the high voltage battery.
- Disconnecting the maintenance connector de-energizes the high voltage system.
- This is achieved by disconnecting the pilot line circuit and the power supply for the high voltage relay connections.
- Operation of this connector should only be performed by qualified personnel.
