• Preview major topics (headings, bolded parts).
• Note highlighted words (bold, italics, colored font, dates).
• Identify words you might need to look up.
• Look at visuals.

Page 5 — Writing Context

• Purpose: inform, persuade, entertain
• Audience: who is the text written for
• Genre: what kind of writing is it (report, analysis, argument, etc.)
• Stance: critical, objective, etc.
• Medium: electronic or print, type of publication

Page 6 — Major Topic Sections

• Summarize major topic sections in a few sentences.
