8 GUIDE TO WRITING A LETTER FOR THE CSEC EXAM
o The length requirements for CSEC is 130 – 150 words.
o Begin your letter with a draft – use Spanish phrases, verbs, etc. beside the cues
o Begin your letter with the date in Spanish – 12 de enero de 2021
o DO NOT write an address.
o Begin the body of your letter with a friendly salutation – Querido/a- dear
o The first paragraph begins next, and should be about 25 words
o Next you make inquiries about health - ¿Qué tal? /¿Cómo estás?- how are you?
o Express wishes for good health. - Espero que estés bien
o You may make mention of receipt of last letter. – Recibí la carta que me mandaste con mucho placer
You then include the purpose for the letter. Yo escribo/ yo estoy escribiendo esta carta para decirte sobre un incidente inolvidable que ocurrió en mi escuela ayer.o
The second and the third paragraph should include the cues required in the letter question and may be about 50 words each.
The concluding paragraph may also have about 25 words, and may include a desire for a prompt response, salutations to other family members, a cordial farewell and the name of the writer.- Espero oír de ti pronto= I hope to hear from you soon / Escríbeme pronto y dame tus noticias= Write me soon and give me your notices. Tu querido amigo / Con mucho cariño, Felipe.
Make sure to include at least two idiomatic expressions
in your letter. A few useful ones are – Hace tanto tiempo que no te veo (Long time no see) ; Te echo de menos (I miss you); Para mí (In my opinion) ; Sin embargo (However, nevertheless) ; Por lo menos (At least); Por lo tanto (therefore) ; De vez en cuando (from time to time);

Querido Juan,
¿Cómo estás? Espero que estés bien. Recibí la carta que me
mandaste con mucho placer. Escribo esta carta para decirte sobre una fiesta
de piscina para mi prima, Susana.
Fue el cumpleaños de mi prima, Susana. Sus padres decidieron
celebrar con una fiesta de piscina. Todo pasaba bien. Había
muchas decoraciones, juegos, música y una cantidad de comida y
bebida. Los invitados incluyeron sus amigos de escuela, algunos
vecinos y sus parientes de la misma ciudad. Todo el mundo trajo
regalos. Bailamos, nadamos, jugamos juegos, comimos y bebimos
de todo.
Mientras Susana cortaba su torta, su primo Adolfo golpeó a su
hermanito y comenzaron a lucharse. Los dos se lucharon hasta la
interrupción de su madre quien les castigó y les llevó a su casa.
Sin embargo, todo lo pasó un buen rato, y Susana estaba muy
agradecida al fin de todo.
