Functions of Cells

The human body relies on cells to carry out essential functions that enable life. There are seven general functions performed by cells:

  1. Movement: This function is primarily seen in muscle cells, which contract and enable movement within the body.
  2. Conductivity: Nerve cells exhibit this function by transmitting signals throughout the body, allowing for communication and response to stimuli.
  3. Metabolic Absorption: Cells in the kidneys and intestines absorb nutrients and other substances necessary for metabolism.
  4. Secretion: Mucous gland cells release substances necessary for processes such as lubrication and protection.
  5. Excretion: All cells are involved in excretion, which is the removal of waste products from cellular metabolism.
  6. Respiration: This is a critical function performed by all cells, involving the conversion of nutrients into energy through cellular respiration.
  7. Reproduction: Most cells have the ability to reproduce, which is essential for growth and healing.

Cell Structure

Cells in the human body can be classified into two main categories: sex cells (or germ cells) and somatic cells. Somatic cells are the building blocks of all body tissues and organs (the term "soma" means "body"). This section will focus specifically on somatic cells.

Somatic cells are highly organized and are surrounded by a structure known as the cell membrane (or plasma membrane). Within each cell, there are various structures called organelles, each performing specific functions vital for the cell's operation. These organelles are suspended in a substance known as cytoplasm, and most somatic cells also possess a nucleus. The nucleus plays a crucial role as it houses the genetic material necessary for reproduction and growth of new cells.

Cell Membrane

The cell membrane encloses the cytoplasm and the organelles within a cell, contributing essential functions related to cellular structure and activity. It not only provides shape to the cell but is also where a majority of cellular activities occur. The membrane contains molecules that function as pathways, enabling the detection and transmission of external signals into the cell. It aids in intercellular connections, helping cells adhere to one another when forming tissues.

Composed of a phospholipid bilayer, the cell membrane features two layers of phospholipids (fat molecules). This configuration creates a fluid-like environment that is critical for membrane function. The bilayer acts as the outer boundary of the cell, maintaining separation between the internal cellular environment (intracellular) and the external fluid (extracellular).

Beyond providing structural support, a primary function of the cell membrane is to regulate the passage of substances in and out of the cell. The membrane can function differentially, allowing certain substances to pass while restricting others, thus maintaining homeostasis within the cell.
