  • Autonomy refers to the ability of individuals or groups to make their own choices and govern themselves without external control.

    Chanak Affair

    • Chanak was a small town on a strait, linking the Aegean and Black seas in Turkey 

    • Britain and Turkey in conflict, 1922

    • Mackenzie King thought most Canadians didn’t want to be involved in European war; Canadians became more isolationist

    • Britain asked for help, King replied only Parliament could make the decision to send troops, making it clear Canada would make its own foreign policy
