Metallic Bonding
Metallic bonding: the electrostatic forces of attraction between a lattice of positive ions surrounded by delocalised electrons
Structure: Lattice structure of metal atoms where the outer shell electrons from each atom are delocalised
Characteristics
- Good conductors of electricity ○ Delocalised electrons that can move freely and carry a charge through a substance
- Malleable (can be hammered into shapes)
- Layers that can slide over each other
- High mp/bp
- Strong electrostatic forces of attraction between positive metal ions and negative electrons
