Glaciers Notes
Continental Glacier - an ice sheet covering a considerable part of a continent.
Alpine (Valley) Glacier - form in high mountains and travel through valleys
U-shaped valleys - carves out the bottom and sides of a valley
Finger lakes - carved U-shaped valleys where deposits of gravel damned streams and caused the depressions to become lakes.
Striations - parallel scratches in rock
Glacial grooves - larger particles that scratch bedrock
Cirques - bowl-shaped depression
Aretes - where 2 cirques meet, a sharp narrow ridge
Horns - glaciers on three or more sides of a mountain
Moraines - sediment at the bottom of a glacier
Eskers - winding ridge of sediment
Drumlins - elongated landforms
Erratics - large boulders found where they did not form
Outwash plains - occur in front of melting glaciers
How do KETTLE LAKES FORM? Blocks of ice get stuck in the sediment. They eventually melt to form lakes.
