Earth as a Complex System and the Four Spheres
Earth is defined as a complex system where living organisms and non-living components interact with each other continuously. These interactions are categorized into four major subsystems or spheres: the Atmosphere, the Biosphere, the Geosphere, and the Hydrosphere.

The Biosphere includes all living organisms on Earth, such as humans, animals, plants, and microorganisms. The Geosphere consists of non-living things that form the physical structure of the Earth, specifically rocks and sand. The Hydrosphere encompasses all water on Earth, including oceans, seas, rivers, and underground water. Due to the abundance of water, Earth is often referred to as the "blue marble" when viewed from space.
The Importance and Utility of Water
Water is essential for life on Earth, as all living organisms need it to survive. Approximately of the Earth's surface is covered by water. Despite its constant movement and change of state, the total amount of water on Earth doesn't change.
Humans utilize water for a wide variety of activities, including:
Preparing food.
Traveling and transportation.
Recreation.
Bathing.
Cleaning.
Manufacturing or industrial processes.
States of Water and Physical Changes
Water can transition between different states of matter through physical processes:
Liquid to Gas: This occurs through evaporation, where liquid water turns into water vapor.
Liquid to Solid: This occurs through freezing, where liquid water turns into ice. This is particularly relevant as most of the freshwater on Earth is found in a frozen state.
Classification of Water: Saltwater vs. Freshwater
Water on Earth is divided into two primary categories based on its salinity:
Saltwater: This forms approximately of the total water on Earth. It is primarily found in oceans and seas. Notable examples of saltwater lakes include Lake Bardawil in Egypt and Lake Assal in Djibouti, which is noted for its high salinity.
Freshwater: This forms approximately of the total water on Earth. It is found in rivers, groundwater, rainwater, and most lakes. A significant portion of this freshwater exists in a frozen state.
Saltwater Ecosystems and Marine Zoning
Saltwater ecosystems are the largest ecosystems on the planet, covering vast parts of the Earth's surface. These are primarily found in oceans and seas and are divided into two distinct zones based on depth:
1. Shallow Areas These areas are close to the surface and receive sufficient sunlight. They contain notable features such as:
Coral Reefs: Diverse marine ecosystems formed by coral polyps.
Intertidal Zone: The area along the ocean coast that is submerged during high tide and exposed/appears during low tide.
2. Deep Areas (Abyssal Zones) These are areas of the ocean that are extremely deep. A defining characteristic of the Abyssal Zone is that sunlight cannot reach these depths, making them permanently dark and cold.
