Deck Information

Storage and Handling

  • Minimum bundle weight for deck: 4,0004,000 pounds.
  • Storage: Deck should be stored off the ground.
  • Drainage: One end should be elevated for drainage.
  • Placement: Deck bundles should be placed along column lines.
  • Support: Ends of the bundles should rest on structural supports.
  • Working areas: Should be 1212 feet wide around deck bundles.
  • Placement Method: Always kneel down when placing steel deck.

Load Capacity

  • Floor deck: 5050 psf capacity for use as a working platform.
  • Roof deck: 3030 psf capacity.

Deck Laps and Bearing

  • Roof deck bearing: Minimum of 1.51.5 inches (one and one half inches).
  • Deck laps: All deck laps should be over supports.

Attachment of Corrugated Metal Deck

  • Attachment points: Ends of each sheet to structural elements, and along the edges to each other.
  • Attachment methods: Screws or welds.
  • Common screw size: Number 1212.
  • Welding restriction: Not recommended unless deck thickness is greater than 2222 gauge (0.0280.028 inches).
  • Well washers: May be used if the deck is less than 2222 gauge but NOT for edge welds.
  • Edge weld quality: Satisfactory if 7575% of the well puddle is attached to steel.

Holes in Corrugated Metal Deck

  • 66-inch hole: No plate reinforcing required.
  • 88-inch hole: Requires a 0.0450.045 inches thick plate.
  • 88-inch to 1313-inch hole: Requires a 0.0570.057 inches thick plate.
  • More than 1313-inch holes: Require frame supports.
  • Openings up to 2424 inches (perpendicular to the deck): Use a C4 by 5.4 channel for support.

Deck Dimensions

  • Widths: 1212, 1818, 2424, 3030, and 3636 inches.

Composite Deck

  • Shear connectors: Used to mechanically lock the concrete and deck together.
  • Finishes: Galvanized or phosphatized.
  • Weight variation: 22 to 44 pounds per square foot.
  • Thickness variation: 0.030.03 to 0.060.06 inches.

Penetrations and Lapping

  • Penetrations: All penetrations in steel deck are made by the trade needing the penetration.
  • Roof deck lapping: 22 inches.

Cellular Deck

  • Function: Provides chases for wiring.

Roof Deck

  • 1x6 WR roof deck: Referred to as B deck.
  • 1x6 IR roof deck: Referred to as F deck.

Form Deck

  • Minimum thickness for standard form deck: 0.0140.014 inches.
