Pre-IB Bio-Kingdoms & Domains

Lesson Topic: Kingdoms and Domains

Target Benchmark: SC.912.L.15.16: Discuss distinguishing characteristics of the domains and kingdoms of living organisms.

Objectives:
  1. Describe Linnaeus’ system of binomial nomenclature.

  2. Enumerate Linnaeus’ levels of biological classification.

  3. Distinguish the domains and kingdoms of living organisms.

Domains of Living Organisms
  • 3 Domains:

    1. Eukarya

    2. Bacteria

    3. Archaea

6 Kingdoms of Life
  • Domain Eukarya:

    • Kingdom Animalia

      • Eukaryotic

      • Multicellular

      • Heterotrophs

      • Two parents

      • Found almost everywhere

      • Ex: anemone, ant, human

    • Kingdom Plantae

      • Eukaryotic

      • Multicellular

      • Autotrophs

      • One or two parents

      • Most found on land

      • Ex: moss, cactus, tree

    • Kingdom Fungi

      • Eukaryotic

      • Mostly multicellular

      • Heterotrophs

      • One or two parents

      • Found almost everywhere

      • Ex: mushroom, mold, yeast

    • Kingdom Protista

      • Eukaryotic

      • Mostly unicellular

      • Autotrophs and heterotrophs

      • One or two parents

      • Ex: seaweed, amoeba, paramecium, euglena

  • Domain Bacteria:

    • Eubacteria

      • Prokaryotic

      • Cells have no nucleus

      • Live in common environments

      • Ex: strep, staph

  • Domain Archaea:

    • Archaebacteria

      • Prokaryotic

      • Unicellular

      • Autotrophs and heterotrophs

      • Live in extreme environments

      • Ex: halophiles, thermophiles, methanogens
