Physical Education

  • Defined as an educational course focused on the maintenance of the human body through physical exercise.

  • Objectives:

    • Develop students' physical competence and movement knowledge.

    • Promote safety in physical activities.

    • Encourage an active and healthy lifestyle.

    • Enhance confidence and generic skills including collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and aesthetic appreciation.


Self-Discipline

  • Definition:

    • Ability to manage one's emotions and weaknesses.

    • Enables individuals to act according to what they believe is right despite challenges.

  • Importance:

    • Provides motivation and resilience.

    • An aspect of character that can be developed and learned.


Developing Self-Discipline

  • Recognized as a process similar to cultivating other character traits.

  • Requires time, effort, and a positive mindset to initiate the development process.


Key Components to Develop Self-Discipline

  1. Nutrition:

    • Eat frequently and maintain a balanced diet.

  2. Exercise:

    • Engage in stretching and physical activities daily.

  3. Rest:

    • Ensure adequate sleep is acquired.


Body Image

  • Refers to an individual's perception of themselves when they look in the mirror.

  • Two Categories of Body Image:

    • Positive Body Image: Acceptance of self regardless of body weight or shape.

    • Negative Body Image: Desire to alter one’s body, leading to dissatisfaction.


Wellness

  • Definition:

    • Consistent practice of healthy habits leading to improved physical and mental health outcomes, fostering a state of thriving rather than merely surviving.


Eight Dimensions of Wellness

  1. Emotional Wellness:

    • Involves understanding personal feelings and managing emotions effectively.

    • Described by the National Institutes of Health as the ability to handle stress and adapt to life changes.

  2. Physical Wellness:

    • Encompasses aspects of health relating to the body such as nutrition, exercise, weight management, and disease prevention.

  3. Occupational Wellness:

    • Relates to personal satisfaction in one’s job or career.

  4. Social Wellness:

    • Encompasses wellbeing in relationships and the ability to express oneself socially.

  5. Spiritual Wellness:

    • Involves finding purpose and meaning in life, which may or may not include belief in a higher power.

  6. Intellectual Wellness:

    • Pertains to mental growth and health through engaging activities that stimulate thought.

  7. Environmental Wellness:

    • Focuses on health aspects linked to one’s environment and eco-friendly practices.

  8. Financial Wellness:

    • Involves understanding financial planning and managing expenses for well-being.


Physical Fitness

  • Definition:

    • Refers to the efficiency of body systems working together to maintain health and carry out daily activities.

    • A fit individual can manage responsibilities while maintaining energy for leisure activities.


Beep Test

  • Developed by Professor Luc A. Leger in the 1970s for evaluating aerobic capacity (VO2max).

  • Participants run between two points 20 meters apart following a set audio tone indicating running speed.

Test Execution

  • Starts with a "triple beep" tone indicating the beginning of the test.

  • Requires participants to run to the opposing end before the next beep.

Scoring the Beep Test

  • The test consists of 21 levels, with each level containing various shuttles (back and forth runs).


Exercise

  • Definition:

    • Refers to physical effort aimed at sustaining and improving health and fitness.

    • Necessary for maintaining physical and mental health.

    • Includes a range of activities from light to high intensity.

Benefits of Exercise

  • Aids in weight control.

  • Reduces risk of cardiovascular diseases.

  • Assists in blood sugar management.

  • Provides mental health benefits and enhances cognitive functions with age.


Healthy Habits

  1. Eating Habits:

    • Essential for preventing chronic diseases, achieve good nutrition.

    • Includes a variety of foods: cereals, legumes, fruits, vegetables, and animal sources.

  2. Sleep:

    • Young adults typically need 7 or more hours of quality sleep each night.

  3. Physical Activity:

    • Aim for 30 minutes to an hour of moderate activity daily; engage in exercise at least three times per week.
