States of Matter

Solids

  • Has definite shape and volume
  • Does not take the shape of a container in which it is placed
  • Particles vibrate in place but you can not see them moving

Liquids

  • Has a definite volume but no definite shape
  • Takes shape of the container it is in but volume remains the same
  • The particles have enough energy to move out of their fixed positions but not enough energy to move far apart

Gases

  • Does not have definite shape or volume
  • Most are invisible they spread out as evenly as far as possible
  • Particles move at a high speed in all directions
