States of Matter
Solids
- Has definite shape and volume
- Does not take the shape of a container in which it is placed
- Particles vibrate in place but you can not see them moving
Liquids
- Has a definite volume but no definite shape
- Takes shape of the container it is in but volume remains the same
- The particles have enough energy to move out of their fixed positions but not enough energy to move far apart
Gases
- Does not have definite shape or volume
- Most are invisible they spread out as evenly as far as possible
- Particles move at a high speed in all directions
