Structures of the Lymphatic System

  • The lymphatic system comprises four main structures:   - Lymph: A clear fluid that resembles plasma.   - Lymphatic Vessels: Vessels that transport lymph and contain special structures.   - Lymphoid Organs: Specialized organs involved in immune responses.   - Lymphoid Tissue: Tissue associated with lymphatic organs that contributes to immune function.

Functions of the Lymphatic System

  • The three main functions include:   - Return Fluid to the Bloodstream: Essential for maintaining fluid balance in the body.   - Absorption of Fat and Fat-Soluble Vitamins: This takes place in the intestines.   - Defense Against Disease: The lymphatic system plays a critical role in the immune response.

Characteristics of Lymph

  • Composition of Lymph: Lymph is made up of four components:   - Water   - Electrolytes   - Waste Products   - Proteins

  • Daily Filtration: Approximately 20 liters of lymph filter through from the interstitium each day.

  • Return to Venous Blood: Lymph is eventually returned to the venous blood circulation.

Consequences of Lymphatic Dysfunction

  • If the lymphatic system did not return fluid to the bloodstream, edema would result, causing swelling.

Lymphatic Drainage and Pathway

  • Thoracic Duct: The thoracic duct drains into the left subclavian vein.

  • Distribution: The distribution of lymphatic vessels is not similar to that of arteries.

  • Lymphatic Capillaries:   - They contain pores and valves.   - Drain into larger vessels that eventually converge into the venous system at the junction of the subclavian vein and the internal jugular vein.

  • Lymph Drainage:   - The thoracic duct drains ¾ of the body's lymph.   - Most of the body's lymph comes from the left side of the body, while the remaining lymph is drained from the right upper quadrant.

Mechanisms of Lymph Movement

  • Three mechanisms contribute to the movement of lymph through the body:   - Contraction of Skeletal Muscles: Helps propel lymph through vessels.   - Changes in Intrathoracic Pressure: Aids in lymph flow during breathing.   - Contraction/Relaxation of Smooth Muscle: Located in the walls of lymphatic vessels.

Lymphatic Valves

  • Multiple valves are present in the lymphatic vessels to prevent backflow of lymph fluid.

Lymph Nodes

  • Small pea-shaped patches of lymphatic tissue that filter lymph are called lymph nodes.

  • Locations of Lymph Nodes: They occur in clusters in three regions:   - Cervical Region   - Axillary Region   - Inguinal Region

  • Lymph nodes consist of two main structures:   - Lymph nodules   - Lymph sinuses

  • Afferent Vessels: Carry lymph toward the lymph node.

  • Efferent Vessels: Carry lymph away from the lymph node.

Thymus and Immune Functions

  • It secretes thymosins, which are hormones that promote the proliferation and maturation of T-cells in lymphoid tissues.

  • The thymus is responsible for the development and maturation of the immune system, being particularly involved in the process of T-cell maturation.

Spleen and Its Functions

  • The spleen is the largest of the lymphoid organs and is primarily responsible for:   - Filtering and cleaning the blood.

  • The spleen is composed of two tissue types:   - White Pulp: Lymphoid tissue surrounding blood vessels.   - Red Pulp: Blood-filled venous sinuses that also contain lymphocytes and macrophages.

  • Other functions of the spleen include:   - Blood Storage   - Destruction of Old Red Blood Cells (RBCs)   - Erythropoiesis Before Birth   - Lymphocyte Production

Development and Aging of Lymphoid Tissue

  • Lymphoid tissue reaches peak development at puberty.
