Formulas and Examples for Molecular Structure and Formal Charge

Formal Charge and Molecular Structure

  • Learning Objectives:

    • Use formal charges to identify the most reasonable Lewis structure for a molecule.

  • Molecular Structure:

    • Arrangement of atoms in a molecule or ion.

  • Guidelines for Using Formal Charges:

    1. Prefer structures with all formal charges equal to zero.

    2. If nonzero formal charges are present, choose the arrangement with the smallest nonzero charges.

    3. Place negative formal charges on more electronegative atoms when selecting among similar structures.

  • Application to Thiocyanate Ion (SCN−):

    • Sum of formal charges = -1 in all structures.

    • Preferred arrangement: lowest number of nonzero formal charges and negative charge on more electronegative atom.

  • Example: Carbon Dioxide (CO2):

    • Three possible structures analyzed.

    • Preferred structure: carbon in the center with double bonds, having all formal charges equal to zero.

  • Example: Nitrous Oxide (N2O):

    • Structure with terminal oxygen preferred due to minimized formal charges and adherence to electronegativity rules.
