In-Class Escritura 3 Grammar Review: Subjunctive Doubt, Conditional, and Past Perfect Tenses
Subjunctive Tense with Verbs and Expressions of Doubt (13.1.2)
General Rule for Doubt and Uncertainty: When the verb in the main clause of a sentence expresses doubt or uncertainty, the verb in the dependent clause (the clause following que) must be in the subjunctive form.
- Sentence Structure: .
- Verbatim Example: "(Yo) Dudo que vendan música argentina en Webster’s." (I doubt that they sell Argentinian music at Webster’s).
Impersonal Expressions of Doubt: Use the subjunctive with impersonal expressions that denote uncertainty or doubt. These include:
- es dudoso que (it is doubtful that)
- es posible que (it is possible that)
- es difícil que (it is unlikely/difficult that)
- es probable que (it is probable that)
- Verbatim Example: "Es dudoso que encontremos libros en español en esta tienda." (It is doubtful that we will find books in Spanish at this store).
Expressions of Certainty (Indicative): Use the indicative mood (not the subjunctive) when the main clause expresses certainty or truth. Examples include:
- es cierto que (it is certain that)
- es verdad que (it is true that)
- es seguro que (it is sure that)
- es obvio que (it is obvious that)
- Verbatim Example: "Es verdad que la cumbia es un baile popular en Panamá." (It is true that the cumbia is a popular dance in Panama).
The Verbs Creer and Pensar:
- Affirmative Use: When using creer (to believe) or pensar (to think) in the affirmative, the indicative mood is used in the dependent clause because it expresses a belief or certainty to the speaker.
- Verbatim Example: "Creo que el tango es un baile muy lindo." (I think that the tango is a very beautiful dance).
- Negative Use: When creer or pensar are used in the negative (no creo que, no pienso que), they express doubt, requiring the subjunctive in the dependent clause.
- Verbatim Example: "No creo que llueva hoy porque hace sol." (I don’t think it will rain today because it is sunny out).
- Affirmative Use: When using creer (to believe) or pensar (to think) in the affirmative, the indicative mood is used in the dependent clause because it expresses a belief or certainty to the speaker.
Uncertainty Adverbs: The expressions tal vez and quizá(s) (meaning "perhaps" or "maybe") inherently convey uncertainty and thus trigger the use of the subjunctive.
- Verbatim Example: "Tal vez/Quizá(s) Andrés Calamaro cante un tango argentino." (Perhaps Andrés Calamaro will sing an Argentinian tango).
Reference Note: Subjunctive conjugations can be found in the Escritura 2 crib sheet and in Mosaicos, Chapter 11.
The Conditional Tense (13.2.1)
Definition and Usage: In Spanish, the conditional tense corresponds to "would + verb" in English. It is primarily used to hypothesize about situations that are not part of the speaker's current reality.
- Verbatim Example: "Yo saldría temprano para el concierto, pero trabajo hasta tarde." (I would leave early for the concert, but I work late).
Conditional vs. Imperfect (The "Used To" Distinction):
- In English, "would" sometimes means "used to" (habitual actions in the past). In these cases, you must use the Imperfect tense in Spanish, not the Conditional.
- Verbatim Example: "Cuando era chica, mi papá me llevaba al parque." (When I was a child, my dad would take me to the park).
Formation of the Conditional Tense: The conditional is formed by adding specific endings directly to the infinitive form of the verb.
- Suffixes for All Verbs (-ar, -er, -ir):
- Yo:
- Tú:
- Él, Ella, Ud.:
- Nosotros/as:

- Verbatim Example: "Ningún escritor latinoamericano había ganado el Premio Nobel de Literatura antes de Gabriela Mistral." (No Latin American writer had won the Nobel Prize for Literature before Gabriela Mistral).
