Disorders of Consciousness

Understanding Persistent Vegetative State

  • Definition: A state where a person has emerged from a coma but lacks significant conscious awareness despite having some signs of biological function.

  • Signs of Consciousness vs. Lack of Awareness:

    • Eyes may be open, but they do not track movements or engage with the environment.

    • Eye movements are often random or aimless, lacking focused interaction.

  • Biological and Neural Function:

    • Patients exhibit typical circadian sleep cycles.

    • Beyond sleep-wake patterns, no signs of conscious awareness are present.

    • No response to verbal prompts or basic commands.

    • Body control is absent, and movements are primarily reflexive.

  • Prognosis: Generally poor; recovery is most likely within six months of brain injury.
