Disorders of Consciousness
Understanding Persistent Vegetative State
Definition: A state where a person has emerged from a coma but lacks significant conscious awareness despite having some signs of biological function.
Signs of Consciousness vs. Lack of Awareness:
Eyes may be open, but they do not track movements or engage with the environment.
Eye movements are often random or aimless, lacking focused interaction.
Biological and Neural Function:
Patients exhibit typical circadian sleep cycles.
Beyond sleep-wake patterns, no signs of conscious awareness are present.
No response to verbal prompts or basic commands.
Body control is absent, and movements are primarily reflexive.
Prognosis: Generally poor; recovery is most likely within six months of brain injury.
