Overview and Structural Layers of the Integumentary System
The integumentary system constitutes the largest organ in the human body.
The structural organization of the skin comprises three primary layers (from superficial to deep):
Epidermis: The outermost layer of the skin.
Demis (Dermis): The middle layer located beneath the epidermis.
Deep layer: The deeper portion of the dermis.
Hypodermis: The innermost, deep subcutaneous layer.
Primary Functions of the Integumentary System
Protection: Serves as a protective physical barrier for the body.
Thermoregulation: Regulates body temperature to maintain internal homeostasis.
Sensation: Provides sensory reception to interact with and detect changes in the external environment.
Vitamin D Synthesis: Responsible for the synthesis and production of Vitamin D.
Dermatomes and Innervation Principles
Definition of Dermatome: A dermatome is an area of skin supplied by a single spinal nerve.
Dermatomal Patterns:
Nerve supply to the skin strictly follows dermatomal patterns.
Each distinct spinal nerve provides sensation to a specific, localized area of the skin.
Diagnostic Utility:
Assists clinicians in locating the exact site of damage to the spine.
Assists in identifying and isolating the source and location of pain.
Appendages of the Skin
Hair:
Specialized skin appendage that functions directly to regulate body temperature.
Nails:
Composition: Composed of the protective protein keratin.
Function: Prevents damage to the tips of the digits.
Sudoriferous Glands (Sweat Glands):
Function as specialized sweat-producing structures that thermoregulate the body.
Sebaceous Glands (Oil Glands):
Function as oil-making organs that produce secretions designed to lubricate the skin.

Increased Circulation: Boosts local blood flow and circulation to effectively nourish the skin.
Promotion of Relaxation: Promotes systemic and muscular relaxation.
