Visual Processing in the Human Brain
Objects in Vision
- Objects that are far away appear as tiny blurs to an individual.
- The challenge of reading distant signs is introduced, stating that while viewing distant objects is difficult, it is important for vision testing.
Vision: From Eye to Brain
- Fovea: The central region of the retina responsible for sharp vision.
- Optic nerve: The nerve that transmits visual information from the retina to the brain.
- Human retina: Contains photoreceptor cells and is viewed through an ophthalmoscope (Fig. 1).
Case Study: G.Y.
- G.Y. suffered an injury to the occipital cortex, resulting in blindness.
- Interaction with the doctor reveals the phenomenon of blind sight:
- The doctor shows a point of light and asks what G.Y. sees. G.Y. responds with 'nothing'.
- The doctor encourages G.Y. to reach out and touch it, despite his inability to see it.
- G.Y. accurately points to the dot 99% of the time, despite claiming to be 'just guessing'. Thus showing the brain’s ability to process visual information unconsciously.
