Human life cycle

Human Life Cycle

Overview

  • Every human being goes through the same stages of life in the same order:

    • Foetus

    • Baby/Infant

    • Child

    • Adolescent/Teenager

    • Adulthood

    • Middle Age

    • Elderly

Objectives

  • After studying this topic, you should be able to:

    • List the stages in the human life cycle.

    • Expound upon each stage.

    • Describe yourself as an adolescent.

Stages of the Human Life Cycle

Foetus

  • The human life begins as a foetus in the mother’s womb.

  • Growth occurs in a protective liquid-filled environment.

  • Nutrition is provided through the umbilical cord.

  • A typical foetal growth duration is approximately nine months, culminating in childbirth.

Baby/Infant

  • Birth marks the transition from foetus to baby, lasting from birth to around one year of age.

  • Infants are highly dependent on caregivers for feeding and changing.

Toddler

  • The toddler stage occurs from ages two to three.

  • Characteristics include increased height, slenderness, and more upright posture compared to infants.

  • This stage marks the end of early childhood with increasing bone density and gradual replacement of cartilage by bone tissue.

Child

  • The childhood stage spans from ages four to eight.

  • Children begin to feed more independently and can perform basic self-care tasks.

  • They gradually gain more independence as they continue to grow and develop.

Puberty

  • Puberty is characterized by significant physical changes and typically begins between ages 9-12.

  • This stage marks the transition towards adolescence with hormonal changes prompting maturation.

Adolescents

  • Defined by the World Health Organization as individuals aged 13 to 18.

  • This stage includes frequent physical changes as well as emotional and social development.

Adulthood

  • Peak physical strength and fitness typically occur from ages 18-39.

  • Adults usually gain independence, establish households, and pursue full-time employment.

  • Adults may also start families of their own.

Middle Age

  • This stage generally stretches from ages 31 to 50.

  • Physical vitality often begins to decline, but many still actively fulfill personal and professional roles.

Elderly

  • By age 67, most individuals retire from work.

  • Strength diminishes compared to youth, though many enjoy fulfilling lives.

  • Individuals may assume the role of grandparents if they have children who have had their own children.
