Module Overview

Purpose of the Module

  • Familiarize students with practice and ethical codes for health professions in South Africa (e.g. psychology, physiotherapy).

  • Introduce ethical guidelines guiding the health professions.

  • Identify registration categories with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

  • Explain the HPCSA and its role.

  • Outline qualifications needed for various health professions.

  • Apply ethical principles in practice contexts.

  • Understand the pathway to professional training and career development.

  • Students advised to familiarize themselves with the HPCSA website for additional resources.

Assessment

  • Two class tests contributing 40% to the final mark.

  • Exam at the end of the semester; in-person attendance required.

  • Tests administered online via FUNDA platform.

  • Make-up tests available under circumstances with proof (e.g. sick note, travel proof).

Class Content Timeline

  • Week 1: Introduction to the module.

  • Week 2: Health Professions Regulatory Board, ethics, professional conduct, education and training.

    • Revision on March 17; Test 1 on March 24 cover these topics.

  • April 7: Continuing professional development, make-up test for Test 1 on April 10.

  • May 5: Revision of subsequent four topics; Test 2 on May 12.

  • Ensure registration with the university to have marks captured.

  • Maintain communication regarding any missed tests with appropriate proof.

  • Study and prepare using the HPCSA website and module guide.

  • Upload of class notes and materials will occur after each class on FUNDA.
