Father Toltan Timeline 

  1. In 1849 Toltans Mother moves from Kentucky to Missouri
  2. Father Toltan was born in Missouri on April 1, 1854
  3. 1857 The Dred Scott case the supreme court decides that African americans are not U.S. citizens
  4. In 1861 The Civil War takes place in South Carolina at Fort Sumter were the first shot is fired
  5. In 1862 Father Toltan escapes with his mother to Illinois
  6. 1863 The emancipation proclamation takes place. The emancipation proclamation was a proclamation that legally freed all slaves in the confederacy
  7. Toltan started school in 1863 and he entered St. Boniface school
  8. He left school a month later because the parish and staff were being threatened and harassed by his presence
  9. The 14th amendment happened in 1868 and it granted citizenship to any person born or naturalized in the U.S.
    1. Toltan was confirmed in 1870 at St. Peter Church
    2. He graduates in 1872 from St. Peters School
    3. He goes to Rome on February 15, 1880 to enter the seminary at the collegium urbanum de propaganda fide
    4. The first African american parish was established in 1882 and it was established in Chicago
    5. Toltan was ordained on April 24, 1886 and he was ordained a priest at St. John Latern Basilica
    6. Plessy v. Ferguson happened in the year 1896
    7. Father Toltan dies on July 9, 1897
