main events

  • Oedipus defeats the Sphinx’s riddle, therefore the people made him king.

  • The people of Thebes came to him, hoping for a cure or explanation for the plague among them (The Murder of King Laius).

  • Creon advises Oedipus to meet with Teiresius, who then tells Oedipus that he himself is the murderer of King Laius

  • Oedipus loses his temper and blames both Teiresius and Creon for the murder of King Laius

  • Jocasta comes in and ironically treats both Creon and Oedipus as children, then tells Oedipus what she knows about the murder and why she thinks oracles are inaccurate (which is ironic due to the prophecy actually being true)

  • Oedipus lines up what he knows about himself with Jocasta’s facts as fears he actually might be Laius’s murderer. The only proof against it is that there may have been more than one man who partook in the murder. There is only one witness who could tell (The Shepard).

  • Oedipus asks for the Shepard to be called in order to reveal the truth.
