    • Exhaustion of bodily resources, leading to decreased functionality.

3. General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)

  • The concept of General Adaptation Syndrome describes the body’s three-stage response to stress:

    3.1 Fight or Flight Stage

    • Initiated during the alarm stage, this involves the mobilization of defenses via:

    • The hypothalamus

    • Activation of the sympathetic nervous system

    • Release of hormones from adrenal glands:

  • It is prevalent across all age groups, with a noticeable increase in older individuals.

7. Stress and Disease: Specific Problems

    • Headaches may develop during or after a stress response.

    • Stomatitis, which includes mouth ulcers, and necrotizing periodontal disease may occur.

    • Prolonged vasoconstriction can impair organ functions or lead to necrosis in gastrointestinal tracts and kidneys.

    • Chronic infections and physical/emotional distress are potential precipitating factors of these conditions.

8. Potential Effects of Prolonged or Severe Stress

8.1 Physical Effects

  • Prolonged severe vasoconstriction can lead to:

    • Renal failure due to ischemia and resultant cell damage.

    • Stress ulcers that arise from decreased mucosal regeneration and mucus production, influenced by vasoconstriction and glucocorticoids.

    • Infections due to the depression of inflammatory and immune responses.

8.2 Psychological Effects

  • Slowed healing processes following trauma or surgery due to:

    • Increased glucocorticoid secretion, which reduces protein synthesis and tissue regeneration.
