Irregular adjectives

Comparative:

• melhor do que - better then

• pior do que - worse than

• maior do que - bigger than

• menor do que (ou mais pequeno) - smaller then

• mais + adjective + do que - more…than

• menos + adjective + do que - less…than

• tão + adjective + como/quanto - as…as

Superlative:

• o melhor - the best

• o pior - the worst

• o maior - the biggest

• o menor/o mais pequeno/a - the smallest

Extremely…

• óptimo

• péssimo

• máximo (x pronounced as «ss»)

• minimo

E.g.

• esta sopa é óptima!

• o irmão dele é péssimo jogador de futebol

• esta agulha é mínima

• a historia deste filme é péssimo

Very/extremely + adjective

• = adjective + íssimo

  • E.g. alto → altíssimo

• With adjectives ending in -e, the ending takes the gender of the noun it refers to

  • E.g. O João está triste → O João está tristíssimo

• With adjectives ending in consonants, they have to go back to their Latin root.

  • E.g. flexível → flexibilíssimo/a.

  • If in doubt, can always use the superlative of «muito». E.g. O chefes deles é muitíssimo flexível.
