Badinerie

Badinerie is part of Suite no. 2, made for Flute and Orchestra

Its written in Binary form and starts in the key of B minor

suite = collection of pieces in the style of French dances of the period

Instruments

This piece is composed of a small chamber orchestra and a flute. The orchestra consists of:

  • 2 violin parts

  • viola

  • cello

  • double bass

  • harpsichord (playing continuo)

continuo = using bass notes as guide and improvising right hand

First Half

The first half starts with an anacrusis and motif x, which outlines the tonic chord of B minor.

At the end of motif x there is a perfect cadence with a dominant 7th chord.

Motif X is then repeated, leading to a rising sequence and a modulation into the dominant key F sharp minor

Second Half

KEY

Second half starts with the same melody but in F sharp major. The music then modulates quickly into the subdominant key E minor, and then its relative major D major.

A long passage of semiquavers leads to a perfect cadence in D. The there is a descending sequence. Then at the end it returns to the tonic B minor
