Diffusion of Innovation Framework
- Definition: The process by which new ideas spread throughout a population or social group.
- Four Core Constructs:
- The innovation itself
- Communication channels
- Time it takes to adopt
- The social system in which groups live
Construct 1: The Innovation
- Definition: Something new or novel, representing anything that differs from what has previously existed.
- Factors Influencing Success or Failure (Adoption vs. Rejection):
- Relative Advantage: The degree to which the innovation is superior or more advantageous than existing alternatives currently available.
- Compatibility: How well the innovation aligns with existing social norms, values, and cultural beliefs.
- Trialability / Suitability: The degree to which the innovation can be experimented with, tested, or tried on a limited basis prior to full commitment.
- Complexity vs. Ease of Use: How simple or difficult the innovation is to understand and operate.
- Observability: The degree to which the results and benefits of using the innovation are visible to others.
- Adoption Rule: Innovations that are helpful, compatible with social norms, triable, easy to use, and yield observable results experience significantly higher rates of adoption.
Construct 2: Communication Channels
- Definition: The specific format or medium people use to share information and spread awareness about an innovation.
- Social Process: Diffusion is fundamentally a social process that occurs as individuals engage in sharing information about something new.
- Mass Media Channels:
- Types: Social media, newspapers, radio, and television.
- Function: Reaches a large audience very quickly.
- Impact: Makes the audience rapidly aware of a new product, idea, or innovation.
- Word of Mouth:
- Functions as an effective communication format depending on the specific nature and context of the conversation.
Construct 3: Time and Adoption
- Definition: Represents how long it takes different segments or groups within a society to adopt an innovation, along with the specific stages involved in that adoption process.
- Segments of the Adoption Curve:
- Innovators:
- The very first segment on the adoption curve.
- Characterized as risk takers.
- Represent a small percentage of the total population.
- Possess a high tolerance and ability to cope with unpredictability.
- Early Adopters:
- Function as the opinion leaders of the community.
- Highly respected individuals who possess intricate communication networks.
- Connected to and knowledgeable about a diverse set of people.
- Majority:
- Divided into two distinct sub-segments along the adoption curve:
- Early Majority: Positioned on the upward slope of the curve; strongly influenced by opinion leaders and mass media.
- Late Majority: Positioned on the downward slope of the curve.
- Late Majority:
- Located on the downward side of the adoption curve.
- Strongly influenced by their peers.
- Wait to adopt until an innovation becomes an established social norm or absolute necessity.
- Laggards:
- Located at the end of the downward side of the adoption curve.
- Characterized as conservative, traditional, and suspicious of innovation.
- Highly risk-averse.
- Wait a very long time before adopting an innovation.
The Innovation-Decision Process
- Definition: The overall length of time and sequential steps required for different segments of a population to make a final decision regarding the adoption or rejection of an innovation.
- Five Sequential Steps:
- Knowledge:
- The essential first step in the process.
- Individuals cannot make a decision about something new without knowing it exists.
- Knowledge is gained directly through communication channels.
- Persuasion:
- The stage where individuals begin developing an attitude (either positive or negative) toward the innovation.
- Attitudes form through thinking about and mentally inserting the innovation into a present or future scenario, which leads toward the persuasion of acceptance or rejection.
- Decision:
- Occurs when individuals choose to engage in activities that will lead directly to adopting or rejecting the innovation.
- Implementation:
- Occurs when the decision is put into action and the individual begins actively utilizing or rejecting the innovation in practice.
- Confirmation:
- The final step where individuals seek validation and confirmation from others to reinforce that their decision to adopt or reject was correct.
Construct 4: Social System, Social Capital, and Networks
- Social System:
- The fourth and final core construct of the Diffusion of Innovation framework.
- Defined as a group of people (formal or informal) working together toward a common goal.
- Systems embody shared norms, values, beliefs, and attitudes.
- Social Capital:
- Defined as the trusting and reciprocal interactions that individuals have with one another, which directly influence behavior.
- Networks:
- The structural connections that people maintain with others, allowing them to gain access to the collective resources of everyone within that network.
- Networks range in scale from nuclear families to whole societies.
- Mechanism: Once trust and reciprocity are established within a network, expectations and obligations increase. These connections and obligations drive attitudes and behaviors that are helpful to the entire group.
Types of Social Capital Relationships
- Bonding Social Capital:
- Relationships between individuals who share similar demographic characteristics, social identities, statuses, and resources.
- Examples: Family members, friends, neighbors, and coworkers.
- Bridging Social Capital:
- Relationships formed between individuals who differ sociodemographically (such as differences in age, education, or ethnicity) but share common goals and interests.
- Function: Enables individuals to engage in activities with mutually beneficial outcomes that are not possible through bonding relationships alone.
- Examples: Church choir, volunteer fire department, and community theater group.
- Linking Social Capital:
- Relationships between individuals who interact across power or authority gradients, where one person holds dominance, control, or explicit influence over the other.
- Examples: Teacher and student, clergy and parishioner, judge and criminal.
Social Ecological Model (SEM)
- Definition: A theoretical framework that explains behavior as the result of a dynamic interplay among multiple factors operating across differing levels of influence.
- Five Levels of Influence:
- Intrapersonal (or Individual):
- Personal factors that directly affect individual behavior.
- Key elements: Personal history, knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, personality traits, self-efficacy, perceptions, age, gender, and education level.
- Interpersonal (or Relationship):
- The relationships maintained with others.
- Functions: Provides social identity, establishes support systems, and defines personal roles within a social construct.
- Institutional (or Organizational):
- Rules, regulations, and policies that shape environments.
- Most commonly associated with workplace environments, but also includes religious organizations.
- Community:
- Formal or informal norms, standards, and expectations held by individuals, groups, or organizations within a community.
- Incorporates the Built Environment as community structures, including:
- Parks
- Safe playgrounds
- Walking paths
- Societal (or Public Policy):
- Broader influences on health and behavior stemming from laws, regulations, policies, social or cultural norms, and public attitudes.
- Includes policies at the local, state, and federal levels that directly impact health, economics, and education.
