  • Hierarchy of Measurement Levels (from least to most information):

    • Nominal

    • Ordinal

    • Interval

    • Ratio

Nominal Level of Measurement

  • Definition: Refers to categories.

  • Characteristics of Nominal Level Categories:

    • Must have at least two distinct categories.

    • Exhaustive: The categories must account for every possible option or characteristic.

    • Mutually Exclusive: There should be no redundancy; an observation or item can only belong to one category.

  • Categorical Order: The order in which the categories are listed does not matter.

  • Information Content: Provides the least amount of information among all levels of measurement.
