Pre-genomics/key concepts of genetics

genotype: The alleles present on a specific chromosomal locus of an individual organism, which determines particular traits and characteristics inherited from its parents.

phenotype: The observable physical or biochemical characteristics of an organism, as determined by both genotype and environmental influences.

basic principle of genetics: The fundamental concept that genes are inherited from parents to offspring, influencing traits and characteristics, and that variations in these genes can lead to differences in phenotype.

mendel’s laws:

law of segregation: The principle stating that during the formation of gametes, the two alleles responsible for a trait separate from each other, so that each gamete carries only one allele for each gene.
