PSA Assignment

Students will create a 60-120 second PSA video or social media reel (think social media reel for TikTok, Instagram) aimed at raising awareness, changing attitudes, or promoting a health behavior related to a specific public health topic of your choosing. Your PSA should be informed by one or more social or behavioral theories discussed in class. Your PSA should also incorporate at least two of the media advocacy tips from the week 10 media advocacy lecture. In addition to the video, you should also submit a short paper that includes the script for your PSA and describes the theories and the constructs you've used in your PSA.

Format: 

  • Focused on caffeine use

    • show drinking celsius, coke, coffee:

Scenes:

  • student studying, looks at clock, celsius in background

  • wake up early, going to class, looking tired/fatigued, making coffee

  • show drinking a soda in the middle of the day and a celsius going to the library

  • show sleeptime crash at the couch, wakeup at 10pm

  • skip to next morning asking why they are not doing well in school, have been staying up every night cramming

  • show at home, unable to sleep and shaking: showinf anxiety

  • rewind all of this

    • show coffee in the morning

    • say no to coke/celsius, grab a lemonade or carbonated water

    • 20 minute nap— maybe say i should nap instead of celsius and mention use of sleep pods on campus

    • studying with schedule ending at 9:00pm, set timer for bedtime routine

  • wake up, feeling refreshed, get grade back on assignment, received an improved grade - walking with friend

  • call to action: caffeinate responsibly: seek alternatives
