Flight Instruments

Navigation and Heading Definitions

  • True Course: The direction of a line connecting two specific points, measured clockwise in degrees.

  • True Heading: The direction the nose of the plane is pointing, incorporating corrections for wind.

  • Magnetic Heading: The direction the nose of the plane is pointing based on the isogonic line, which is represented as a dotted magenta line on aeronautical charts.

Communication Procedures

  • Airport Communication Structure: When communicating with a facility such as Hooks Ground, the following sequence is utilized:

    • Recipient Identification: Who you are talking to (e.g., Hooks Ground).

    • Self-Identification: Who you are, including the type of aircraft being flown and the tail number.

Weather Advisories and Hazards

  • SIGMETs:

  • Thunderstorms:

    • Ingredients: Moisture (water vapor), unstable air, and a lifting mechanism.

    • Stages:

      1. Towering Cumulus: Warm air moving upward.

      2. Mature: Presence of both updrafts and downdrafts.

      3. Dissipating: Dominated by downdrafts.

    • Hazards: Downdrafts, updrafts, turbulence, microbursts, high winds, lightning, rain, and tornadoes.

    • Safety Rule: Maintain a distance of at least 20miles20\,miles from a thunderstorm.

  • Icing:

    • General Hazards: Disrupts airflow, degrades lift, and structural ice reduces engine performance.

    • Clear Ice: Glossy and transparent, formed by large supercooled water droplets. It is dangerous because it significantly disrupts airflow, is difficult to see, and is hard to remove.

    • Rime Ice: Rough and milky white, formed by small supercooled water droplets freezing on impact. It disrupts airflow.

    • Mixed Ice: A combination of rime and clear icing.

Emergency and Flight Principles

  • The 5 C's (Lost Procedures):

    1. Climb: Climb to improve visibility of the ground.

    2. Communicate: Contact relevant agencies.

    3. Confess: Tell ATC you are lost.

    4. Comply: Follow instructions or suggestions from ATC.

    5. Conserve: Conserve fuel. (Always stay calm and do not panic).

  • Control Surfaces and Axes:

    • Ailerons: Control roll about the longitudinal axis.

    • Rudder: Controls yaw about the vertical axis.

    • Elevator: Controls pitch about the lateral axis.

  • Engine Operations:

    • Engine Necessities: Fuel, Air, Spark, Oil lubrication, Cooling, and Cleaning.

    • Four-Stroke Cycle:

      1. Intake: Sucks fuel/air mixture into the cylinder through the intake valve.

      2. Compression: The piston rises and compresses the mixture.

      3. Power/Combustion: Spark plugs ignite the mixture, forcing the piston down.

      4. Exhaust: The piston rises to push waste gases out through the exhaust manifold.

Airport Signals and Codes

  • Light Gun Signals:

    • Steady Green: Cleared for takeoff (ground) / Cleared for landing (flight).

    • Steady Red: Stop (ground) / Give way and continue circling (flight).

    • Flashing Green: Cleared for taxi (ground) / Return for landing (flight).

    • Flashing Red: Taxi clear of the runway (ground) / Not safe for landing (flight).
