LIFE ORIENTATION GRADE 11 NOTES

Development of the Self in Society: This chapter explores how individuals can effectively plan and achieve life goals. Goals are tangible achievements that differ from dreams, as they can be actively pursued and accomplished. To ensure successful goal-setting, the SMART criteria are proposed: goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-based. There are different types of goals: short-term goals can be accomplished within days to a few months, medium-term goals are targeted for achievement within six months, and long-term goals are set for several years ahead.

The chapter outlines a five-step method for planning and goal-setting that includes writing down the goal, verifying it aligns with the SMART criteria, creating an action plan, implementing that plan, and evaluating the goal's achievement. Additionally, problem-solving skills are emphasized, which involve clearly defining problems, gathering information, brainstorming solutions, outlining the effects of each solution, and selecting the best option based on evaluation. Personal values play a crucial role in guiding behavior and decision-making, shaped by factors such as environment and education, ultimately influencing goal-setting.
