Thermochemistry

Thermochemistry: When a chemical reaction occurs, energy, in the form of heat is either released or absorbed by the reaction (studying energy involved in chemical reactions)

\ Energy:

  • A measure of the abitlity of an object or system to work on another object or system

SI units = J = (kgm^2)/s^2

Another common unit: calorie (food) -→ 1 cal = 4.184 J

Energy types:

  • Kinetic Energy   * heat
  • Potential Energy   * elastic   * gravitational   * chemical   * electrical/magnetic
  • Solar Energy   * the ultimate source of Energy on Earth comes from the Sun
  • Mechanical Energy   * Em = Ep + Ek

\ Law of Conservation of Energy

  • All energy in the universe is constant   * Change in Energy of Universe = 0

Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can change forms or be transferred.
