Thermochemistry
Thermochemistry: When a chemical reaction occurs, energy, in the form of heat is either released or absorbed by the reaction (studying energy involved in chemical reactions)
Energy:
- A measure of the abitlity of an object or system to work on another object or system
SI units = J = (kgm^2)/s^2
Another common unit: calorie (food) -→ 1 cal = 4.184 J
Energy types:
- Kinetic Energy
- heat
- Potential Energy
- elastic
- gravitational
- chemical
- electrical/magnetic
- Solar Energy
- the ultimate source of Energy on Earth comes from the Sun
- Mechanical Energy
- Em = Ep + Ek
Law of Conservation of Energy
- All energy in the universe is constant
- Change in Energy of Universe = 0
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can change forms or be transferred.
