Advanced Consult

  1. Mark “In op” on DSN

  2. Send patient to pano via iCat

  3. Retrieve and greet patient

  4. Perform Pano scan

  5. Bring into room and address reason for visit

  6. Record what patient says about reason for visit, their pain level and for how long. Verify dentist referral and pharmacy during this

  7. Ask if there is any swelling or pus (record as denied or present)

  8. Record any allergies to medications and what medications they’re currently taking

  9. Record past medical history (“have you been diagnosed with anything like asthma, diabetes, or any issues with your kidney, liver, heart, or lungs?”) ***IF THEY HAVE DIABETES: ask for last A1C reading, and what their typical sugars run (ex. 130-150)

  10. Record any surgical history, especially anything they’ve had sedation for (“No issues with sedation or any complications you’re aware of?”)

  11. Record if they’d like sedation or not (explain differences and say they can speak with the doctor if uncertain)

  12. Record sedation questions (“Alright these questions are for sedation purposes, we like to have them on file even if you’re using local for this procedure.”) ***IF THEY REGULARLY use drugs like cannabis, THC, edibles, explain that we need this info because regular users have a higher tolerance to sedation and we need to make adjustments

  13. Record Vitals via Heart symbol (“Alright I’m just going to take your blood pressure and then we’ll go over the scan we just took.”)

  14. While waiting for blood pressure, ask for height and weight to also record in vitals

  15. Do a basic go over of their pano x-ray (“So these are your wisdom teeth, those are your sinuses and this is the nerve that runs along your jaw that gives you sensation to your lower lips and chin.”)

  16. Explain extraction process (sections tooth, bone density, type of sutures)

  17. Explain Medications (Post-operatively we’ll have you take Ibuprofen for 5 days for inflammation swelling. Over the counter Tylenol. Hydrocodone. 3 Triazolam 1 test dose)

  18. Explain Fasting (no food 6-8 hours before, no liquids 2 hours)

  19. Explain Diet (Chewing will work those jaw muscles and bring better blood flow to help you heal faster)
