Light energy is a form of kinetic energy that allows us to see.

The Electromagnetic Spectrum
Visible Light:
The visible light we perceive is part of a much broader range of types of electromagnetic radiation.
Spectrum Includes:
Lower energy waves such as radio waves.
Higher energy waves such as gamma rays.

Nature of Electromagnetic Waves
Wave Type:
Electromagnetic waves are transverse waves.
In transverse waves, the oscillations occur perpendicular (at right angles) to the direction of wave travel.
Example: Ripples in a pond are a form of transverse wave.

Luminous and Non-Luminous Objects
Definitions:
Luminous Objects: Objects that emit (produce) light.
Examples: The Sun, lightbulbs, torches, flames.
Non-Luminous Objects: Objects that do not produce their own light but reflect light or allow light to pass through them.
Examples: The Moon, a desk, a window, an apple.

What distinguishes luminous objects from non-luminous objects?

Interaction of Light with Non-Luminous Objects
Non-luminous objects are visible because light from luminous objects reflects off them and enters our eyes.
Types of Non-Luminous Objects:
Transparent: Allow almost all light to pass through, enabling clear visibility through the material.
Examples: Clear glass, still shallow water.
Translucent: Allow some light to pass through, but it gets scattered, making objects behind appear blurry.
Examples: Tissue paper, frosted glass.
Opaque: Do not allow light to pass through. Light is either absorbed or reflected, preventing visibility through the material.
Examples: Brick, wood.
