Metallic Bonding in Metals and Alloys

Metallic Bonding

Introduction

  • Metallic bonding occurs between atoms in metals or alloys (mixtures of metals).
  • Example: Copper wire (insulated with plastic) is used to illustrate.

Atomic Arrangement in Metals

  • Atoms are arranged in a structured lattice.
  • Outermost shells of the metal atoms contain electrons.
  • Diagrammatic representation shows metal atoms with one electron each in the outermost shell (simplification for explanation).

Electron Behavior and Ion Formation

  • Electrons are loosely held by the atoms.
  • Electrons can easily move away from the atoms.
  • When electrons move away, atoms become positively charged ions.
  • Metal ions are formed with a positive charge.
