Asexual Reproduction

  • Asexual reproduction involves only one parent, resulting in offspring that are genetically identical clones.

  • Common in plants (e.g., spider plants) and bacteria (binary fission).

  • Some animals like Hydra, aphids, and starfish also reproduce asexually.

Process

  • No sex cells or fertilization involved.

  • No fusion of gametes or mixing of genetic information.

  • Occurs through mitosis.

  • Examples:

    • Potatoes and daffodils: underground food storage organs.

    • Spider plants: plantlets along branches.

    • Strawberries: runners.

    • Hydra: budding.

    • Starfish: splitting or arm regeneration.

    • Bacteria: simple division.

Advantages

  • Rapid population increase.

  • No need to find a mate.

  • Quick exploitation of suitable habitats.

  • Filling niches, making it harder for predators and competitors to invade.

Disadvantages

  • Lack of genetic variation.

  • Slower adaptation to changing climate or selection pressures.

  • Vulnerability to diseases and predators.

Combined Reproduction

  • Some organisms combine both sexual and asexual reproduction depending on conditions.

  • Examples:

    • Malarial parasites: asexual in humans, sexual in mosquitoes.

    • Many fungi: asexual by spores, sexual for variation.

    • Plants: sexual via seeds, asexual via runners (strawberries) or bulb division (daffodils).

    • Aphids: asexual in spring/summer, sexual in winter.
