Overview of Semiconductors
Semiconductors are materials that have electrical conductivity between that of conductors and insulators.
They are characterized by their ability to conduct electricity under certain conditions.
Characteristics
Pure State:
Semiconductors in their pure state have equal numbers of charge carriers (electrons and holes).
Types of Semiconductors
Intrinsic Semiconductors
Pure semiconductors with no impurities.
Examples:
Germanium (Ge)
Silicon (Si)
Extrinsic Semiconductors
Doped semiconductors that have impurities added.
The number of electrons is not equal to the number of holes.
Doping:
The intentional process of adding controlled amounts of impurities to a pure semiconductor to improve its electrical conductivity.
Types of Impurities:
Donor Impurities:
These are pentavalent atoms (e.g., phosphorus) that donate extra electrons to the semiconductor, increasing the number of electrons.
Acceptor Impurities:
These are trivalent atoms that create holes in the semiconductor, increasing the number of holes.
