Time:

Question (possibly) on test: Name a century (i.e 8th Century CE), give me a year from that century.

Question (possibly) on test: Name a date (i.e August 6th, 301), tell me what century this date occurred in.

  • Know the difference from BCE and CE

  • Understand how years in BCE move backwards (ex: 1st Century BCE is 100-0) and how after CE it continues forward (ex: 1st Century is 0-100)

  • Zero is a “Placeholder Year”

IMPORTANT: The following are the time periods that we are studying. You need to know these.

  • 600-1450 Post-Classical Era

  • 1450-1750 Early Modern Era

  • 1750-1900 Long 19th Century

  • 1900-Present 20th Century

Sourcing:

Definition: Involves the ability to describe, select, and evaluate relevant evidence about the past from diverse sources from the time period in which we are studying.

  • A Primary Source is something written or created in the time period being studied.

  • Secondary Sources are a source that interpret an event (WWII Movie, Textbook, etc.)

HAPP—Y:

  • Historical Context

  • Audience

  • Purpose

  • Point of View

  • Y = Why?

Comparison:

Comparison Definition (Shortened Version): Essentially, discussing how ideas, people, events, civilizations are similar and/or different.

Contextualization:

Contextualization Definition: The ability to connect historical events and processes to specific circumstances of time and place as well as broader, regional, national, and global processes.

Causation:

Causation Definition: Essentially, the events or ideas (big or small) that directly led to or may have contributed to something we are studying in history.

Patterns of Change and Continuity Over Time: Evaluating what in a given period has changed over time and what in a given period has stayed the same and being able to explain why that happened in that way.

Argumentation:

Argumentation Definition: The ability to create an argument and support it using relevant historical evidence and then also provide reasoning.
