Magnetic fields

A magnetic attracts materials containing the metals iron, steel, nickel and cobalt. A magnetic field is the space around the magnet where the force is experienced. The ends of the magnets are called poles. The poles of a magnet are the strongest. The magnet has 2 ends, the South Pole and North Pole.

Magnetic field lines:

Shows the direction that a compass would point to

Always run from the north pole to the south pole

Represents a strong magnetic field when close to each other

Represents a weak magnet when further away to each other

Attraction and repulsion of poles

Magnetic poles either attract or repel. Poles that are alike will repel and push away, poles that are unlike will attract which pulls the magnets together.
