Volcanoes-Types-according-to-shape
Types of Volcanoes According to Shape
Objectives
Describe the types of volcanoes according to the shape of their cones.
Understand how the type of material emissions affects the volcano’s slope.
General Types of Volcanoes
Shield Volcanoes
Formed by the accumulation of non-viscous lava that flows freely.
Results in a broad, slightly domed structure resembling a warrior’s shield.
Examples:
Mauna Loa in Hawaii
Sierra Negra in Galapagos Island
Cinder Volcanoes
Built from ejected lava fragments.
Characterized by a steep slope and wide crater.
The most abundant of the three major volcano types.
Examples:
Smith Volcano
Mt. Paricutin in Mexico
Babuyan Island
Composite/Stratovolcano
Large, nearly perfect sloped structures formed from the alternate solidification of both lava and pyroclastic deposits.
Examples:
Mt. Mayon
Mt. Fuji
Summary of Types
Shield Volcanoes: Broad, low profile.
Cinder Volcanoes: Steep, narrow profile.
Composite/Stratovolcanoes: Large, perfect slopes with alternating material types.
