Information Sources

WHAT IS AN INFORMATION SOURCE?

An information source is a person, thing, or place from which information comes, arises, or is obtained.

ELECTRONIC VS NON-ELECTRONIC SOURCES

  • Electronic resources (or e-resources) are materials in digital format accessible electronically. Examples of e-resources are electronic journals (e-journal), electronic books (e-book) online databases in varied digital formats, Adobe Acrobat documents (.pdf), webpages.

  • Non-Electronic Sources are materials in a printed format that does not requires electronic accessibility. Example printed textbooks, newspapers, magazines, encyclopedias etc.

ADVANTAGES

  • Accessibility: Electronic sources are readily accessible from anywhere with an internet connection, providing convenience for users worldwide. Therefore, overcoming geographical barriers by allowing access to information regardless of location as opposed to non-electronic source which are limited to a geographic location.

  • Real-Time Feedback and Interaction: Online forums, comment sections, and social media platforms associated with electronic sources allow users to engage in discussions, ask questions, and provide feedback thus facilitating interaction and knowledge sharing among users. On the other hand, non-electronic sources are static and does not allow for user's interaction.

DISADVANTAGES

  • Dependency on Technology: Electronic sources require access to digital devices, the internet, and electricity, so users are vulnerable to technology disruptions, such as power outages, device malfunctions, or internet connectivity issues. On the other hand, non-electronic sources are independent of digital devices and internet access.
